NYSCOP Commends Governor Hochul for Vetoing Costly Health Insurance Mandates, Prioritizing Affordability for New Yorkers

ALBANY, NY – The New York Conference of Blue Cross and Blue Shield Plans (NYSCOP) is grateful to Governor Kathy Hochul following her recent vetoes of several health insurance mandate bills, showing excellent judgment in favor of affordability for all New Yorkers.

NYSCOP greatly appreciates the Governor for affirming her commitment to combating the rising cost of living, particularly in the realm of healthcare, by rejecting measures that would have cumulatively increased health insurance premiums for families and employers across the state.

“Governor Hochul should be applauded by every New Yorker concerned about the rising cost of living, especially healthcare,” said Lev Ginsburg, Executive Director. “By rejecting these mandates, the Governor affirmed her commitment to affordability. Each new mandate adds a cumulative burden to premiums. In a state already grappling with some of the highest healthcare costs in the nation, this is a burden that employers and everyday New Yorkers simply cannot afford to shoulder further.”

“Governor Hochul’s recent actions send a clear message: that healthcare policy must be balanced with the economic reality of the people it serves,” concluded Ginsburg.

“With expensive bills mandating ‘no co-pay’ inhalers and mandates for coverage of creative arts therapy and backup cochlear implants still awaiting the Governor’s action, we are hopeful that she will continue her consistent approach in rejecting these remaining mandate bills that, if signed, would drive up costs for average New Yorkers and small businesses.

By prioritizing affordability and putting a check on premium-inflating mandates, she is standing up for New York’s families and employers. We thank her for these recent vetoes and ask that she continue to hold the line.”
