Open Enrollment Extended to May 15

Governor Cuomo announced open enrollment has been extended again, aligning New York with the federal marketplace and other state marketplaces extending enrollment due to the pandemic.

The open enrollment period will now run through May 15. New Yorkers can apply for coverage through NY State of Health, New York’s health insurance Marketplace, or directly through insurers.

Coverage start dates vary:

  • Enroll March 15: Coverage starts April 1
  • Enroll by April 15: Coverage starts May 1
  • Enroll by May 15: Coverage starts June 1

Most who enroll will also qualify for financial assistance to lower the cost of their coverage.

Individuals who are eligible for other NY State of Health programs—Medicaid, Essential Plan and Child Health Plus—can enroll year-round.

In January, President Joe Biden signed an executive order to open up the federal marketplace for three months as of Monday so uninsured people can buy a plan and those who want to change their marketplace coverage can do so.
