Governor Cuomo Signs Consumer Notification Legislation into Law

Late yesterday, Governor Cuomo signed into law legislation to streamline health insurance rules relating to consumer notifications. The New York State Conference of Blue Cross and Blue Shield Plans (NYSCOP) strongly supported the bill (S.5723/A.7737), sponsored by Senator James Seward and Assemblyman Kevin Cahill.

The new law corrects a confusing situation for consumers by creating a consistent requirement for all health insurance companies to notify consumers 90 days prior to discontinuing any health insurance product. It took effect immediately. For more information, view NYCOP’s Memo in Support of the legislation.
